I found it interesting reading up the facts concerned with salems past and the witch trials i have heard about them for years but never explored the facts in any detail. It dosent sound nearly as bad as what when on in britain around the same time the whole witchcraft thing was much deeper here than in america.Persecutions of witches here started around 1563 and the given figure is something like a 1000 people were hanged. Then there was the drowning of witches. There have been accounts...

I know how many were hung. But if any one could tell me how many died in the jails and in the dungeon because of this hysteria would be of great help.
I have skimmed some of the books we have but there are not any numbers giving a total.
I know that the jails and dungoen were way overcrowded and I know that most could not afford their food and space in the jails.
I get this question several times but unfortunately can not answer.
The answer would be greatly...

Just picked up a collection of Nathaniel Hawthorne short stories and read Young Goodman Brown.

For those of you who haven't read it, its about a man and his wife in Salem Village (presumably around the time of the witchcraft trials) who are tempted by the devil to join his ranks. One of the ladies accused during the trials is a character (actually, now that I think of it there are two) in the short story. It's an interesting perspective on how things might have went down -- written by...

Has anyone read Charles Upham's Salem Witchcraft?

It was written in the 19th century but is still supposedly the utmost authoritative book on the witchcraft trials -- I think it may have been the first as well. Upham was a mayor of Salem and one of the first to study the trial documents. Every Salem book that I have read gives props to this one, published in two volumes.

I'm just asking because I am thinking of buying it...

Well we know that the "witches" who were hanged were tossed into shallow graves without proper burial. But many of their bodies were taken away by family members under cover of night and given a proper burial. MY question is this -- have any historians actually tried to figure out a probable location for where these people were buried?

A good place to start would probably be the Rebecca Nurse home in Danvers.

Nor the Great
<img...

For about the last two years, I have been hearing about this "new " theory. You guys probably know the one I'm talking about.

It's the theory that suggest that Salem had a bad harvest in 1691 and alot of their wheat ended up containing -- I can't remember the name, but its the active ingredient in LSD. So the accusing girls eat this contaminated bread and maybe see what they were actually claiming to have saw -- due to hallucinating.

The town then falls into Mass...
